True that. Biff: "Is it loud enough for you tonight?" Audience: "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" |

| It's nice to see some love for Saxon. They always seemed to get a back seat to Maiden and Priest but they have a huge influence on metal and and except for a couple duds, a more then solid discography. |

| Are Saxon releasing more remastered editions of their albums? I've seen a couple of their later 80s works for pre-order and looks like it might be an idea to pick them up. |

Yep, they've got them on a variety of sites like play.com and dvd.co.uk. Haven't picked up any of their albums really, all I have is the Strong Arm and Wheels of Steel package and Metalhead. Been waiting to see if they came down in price but they seem to be stuck around £7.
In fact I've just ordered Denim and Leather, and Power and The Glory from the play-trade section.
The reason I was unsure was because they also have some Sonata Arctica releases for pre-order (an EP, studio album and live album). The EP has been announced as a re-release but nothing on any of the others, the release date on the EP also seems to differ from the band's site. |

Wheels of Steel 1980
This was the album that blew the doors off the metal community. Not just the NWOBHM crowd, but worldwide. Most every "civilized" country in the world recognized this album as being on par, or better than, Iron Maiden - S/T or Judas Priest - British Steel. America, as usual, was lost in whatever was popular at the time - new wave, Bryan Adams, Pablo Cruise, ugh. At this point in Saxon's career, they were actually MORE popular than Iron Maiden, and Def Leppard had barely made a splash yet. Tunes like: Motorcycle Man, 747[Strangers in the Night], and the pre-speed metal anthem, Machine Gun [a full 2 years before Accept's "Restless and Wild", mind you]. This sophmore album is never quoted as being in the top tier of their discography. Yet, for some reason, "Wheels of Steel" remains a crowd-participation favorite live, is usually their encore at concerts, and has been covered by bands more than any other Saxon tune. That just explains one thing to me, personally.....UNDERRATED!!!!! And, oh yeah - Americans are sheep. |
I love this album. Every track is great. |

I believe they reissued Wheels of Steel not long ago, with about eight bonus tracks. Two being demos, and six being live tracks. That's the version of the album I own. |

| Saxon are currently invovled in their latest project "Heavy Metal Thunder" on DVD. It has been put back twice so far because according to Biff they want this to be the best Bio of the band that has ever been released. This DVD goes back to when they first started and chronos the history of the band along with live concerts from the 80's never seen before. I ordered this last year and it will soon be here can't wait for this. Wargod51 |

| This is a tough one, I tend to be more partial to 80s Saxon than the newer batch of albums.
I have actually been listening more to the Self-Titled album recently which I neglected for a long time mostly because I kept thinking the latter material was stronger but there are some hidden gems on that album too and I love the bluesy feel on some of the songs.
I think the Power and the Glory is an underrated classic - it was sandwiched between two rather big releases for the band and it usually doesn't get enough credit. Of course the Eagle Has Landed is a concert staple as is the gallop of the title track. However, songs like Warriors, This Town Rocks, Midas Touch and Watching the Sky.
My least favorite Saxon album (and this pretty much eliminates all doubt about which albums I like lol) is Forever Free. The title track is fantastic but for an early 90s Saxon album the production is horrible! It sounds so muddy when I think it should have had a clearer razor sharp sound. Even the material is nowhere near as solid as the previous releases.
Dogs of War used to be an album I could hardly ever listen to but now I really love it. It is a very different release for Saxon. Listening to it the first time you get the feeling the band is just confused but on subsequent spins it sounds like a rather fresh Saxon release. Walking Through Tokyo really works for me, I can visually associate Saxon with Japan - it seems like the two go hand in hand as does metal generally and Japan.

| The first album is good, but nowhere near the three that followed it, and that's my favorite era of the band.
Some of the stuff they've done since Denim is good, but I'll stick to the first few. |

Well, I really want to see them put that performance from Nottingham, UK in 1983 out on DVD. I mean, the other concert videos they had back in the day have been issued on DVD so I don't see why that one hasn't. |

| A Call To Arms At this point in a bands career they're either trying to sound modern which rarely works or, as in Saxon's case, seem to be content with who they are and what they do. If you rolled Inner Sanctum with Wheels of Steel and add a little Lionheart and you'll have ACTAs. This album is actually a lot of fun, nice lead break in Chasing the Bullet, some rippers in Afterburner and Hammer of the Gods and even some modern power metal sound in When Doomsday comes. And the song, Back in '79, well, could almost be from then it has such a throwback sound. Saxon keeps chugging along and making some worthy music. |
