PostSubject: Great Cover Songs: Part II   Tue May 22, 2007 3:10 am

Do you guys remove old threads? I can't find that old cover songs thread. So, I started a new one because I just heard a cool cover:

MAGNITUDE 9 - FLIGHT OF ICARUS (Iron Maiden)

Ken over at Laser CD (Sensory Records) is selling two albums by this band for $8. I've always wanted to hear them so I picked them up. First off, this band is way more power metal than I expected. I was expecting something like Magellan or Enchant. No way. This is progressive, but progressive power metal. Anyway, I just got through a few spins of Reality In Focus and I'm mightily impressed! They remind a lot of Fates Warning. Anyway, that's a pretty snazzy Maiden cover.

Ah, they also do a fine Wild Child - WASP, when the vocalist can remember the lyrics.....

Have you heard that cover? It's actually probably one of the best "Purple Haze" covers ever done.

Dave Matthews Band also does an awesome cover of this song.

Yes I have - I thought it was OK, but I could picture King's X doing a KILLER cover of it - they did an awesome cover of Manic Depression

NOBODY (odd metalband from Spiritofradio's neck o' the woods, so Saxon says)...they do a nifty version of "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" which you must all know is the coolest Gordon Lightfoot tune ever....

I'm assuming you're talking about the studio version (good)from "The Real Thing" and not the live version from "Nativity in Black" where Mike Patton slurs and mumbles through the lyrics (bad, very bad).

Here's one I've always liked:

PRO-PAIN - SOUTH OF HEAVEN

If you don't like Pro-Pain just skip it. It's basically Pro-Pain turning a Slayer song into a Pro-Pain song. Pretty cool, though. It works well. And here's another:

PRO-PAIN - REFUSE/RESIST

A natural fit for this band. Not very different, but a good cover.

Realm - Eleanor Rigby (The Beatles)
Megadeth - These Boots (Nancy Sinatra)
Heathen - Set Me Free (Sweet)
Metal Church - Highway Star (Deep Purple)
Dead Horse - Rock Lobster (B-52's)
Sentinel Beast - Phantom of the Opera (Iron Maiden)
Intruder - (I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone (The Monkees)
Laaz Rockit - Holiday in Cambodia (Dead Kennedys)
Mordred - Super Freak (Rick James)
Xentrix - Ghostbusters (Ray Parker Jr.)

Ok the last 2 are kinda silly, jokey tracks but I enjoy them for what they are. They obviously don't take themselves seriously, at least.

and I don't know if you'd necessarily call them covers but Mekong Delta did terrific renditions of the themes to Hitchcock's "Psycho" and "The Twilight Zone" on 'Interludium (Begging for Mercy)' and 'Twilight Zone,' respectively.

A good bump! Since we've been discussing Queensryche:

QUEENSRYCHE - SCARBOROUGH (Simon & Garfunkel)

That's one of the coolest covers I've ever heard. I love that build-up! And here's another one:

AZRAEL'S BANE - DIARY OF A MADMAN (Ozzy)

I just got their Wings Of Innocence CD today; this is the final track on the album. It's not quite as hard-hitting as the original, but I like how they've changed it up.
